Acid Storage Cabinets - What to Look For in Acid Cabinets to Keep Your Facility and Employees Safe

Next to flammable liquids, acids are among the most dangerous substances you're likely to be storing at your facility. And they too require extreme care when it comes to storing them. Not only is it common sense, but it's the law too.

So as you investigate how best to store them, you'll find special acid storage cabinets, sometimes also called corrosive storage cabinets. These are carefully crafted and offer a variety of protective measures.

Before you even consider an acid storage cabinet, however, make sure it has been approved by OSHA and that it meets the requirements of the NFPA Code 30. If it does, you're already on the right track.

Here are some of the key features you ought to be looking for when you shop for an acid storage cabinet:

First of all, it needs to be made out of solid 18 gauge steel. Unless, of course, it's a special cabinet designed for nitric, sulfuric, or hydrochloric acids. Those corrosives would simply eat holes into the steel and therefore need to be stored in cabinets made out of high density polyethylene, also called poly cabinets.

You'll find that high quality steel cabinets often offer a finish of lead-free epoxy powder coating, which provides better protection than simple epoxy paint. This is a definite plus.

You'll also find high density polyethylene trays for additional protection in the event of spills.

Also look for the following safety features: external and internal welded construction, adjustable galvanized steel shelves, preferably ones capable of holding 350 lbs or more. Bilingual warning labels (maybe even trilingual).

The cabinets should also have raised leak proof sills, at least 2 inches high. A ground connection is important as well. For additional safety, they should also have reinforced double walls with at least an inch and a half of air space between them.

Just remember that safety should be your top priority, so make sure to get the kind of acid storage cabinet that will protect your employees, your facility, and you.
