How can you detect a gas leak? There are several ways.
You can smell it. Because natural gas is odorless in its pure form, your gas company puts in a rotten egg smell into it to warn you if there is a leak. So, when you smell rotten eggs, there's a chance that there's a leak somewhere in or around your house.
You can hear it. Check your gas appliances (stove, grill, etc) to see if there is a connection problem.
Once you have an idea of where the leak is (there's a good chance the leak is coming from some connector tubes) apply a solution of water and soap/dishwasher fluid to the suspected areas. You'll start to see bubbles wherever there is a leak. You can also use this soap and water method to see where your car tire is leaking.
Sometimes you can't smell a leak and you can't hear it. It's always good to have an electronic gas leak detector. Although these detectors won't give you the exact source of the leak, they will warn you there something is wrong and you should start checking for the exact location of the leak.
When looking for information on gas leaks, there is a contradiction in many sources. Some say that you should evacuate your house and others say that it's okay to repair the gas leak yourself. You have to use your own intuition in deciding whether or not to leave the house. Whatever you do, don't use any electronic devices and, most importantly, do not light any fire as this may ignite the natural gas that is in the air.
