Sword practice, circles, figure 8s, right side view - 12/02/08 (Autumn) Working out indoors with a sword has rarely been a realistic option for me. When indoor space is limited, it's not easy to keep a 3-foot sword moving smoothly, continuously, without hitting some household fixture, or a piece of furniture, or a wall, or a door, or the ceiling! However, when a chance to practice with a tai chi sword presents itself outdoors, where there's much more room to move around, I take advantage of the opportunity. Working out with a metal tai chi sword helps me develop and refine smooth, continuous "total body jing" - - power that originates at my weighted foot's connection to the ground and passes out to my fingertips, and beyond, through the medium of the sword. Sword practice helps me project "total body jing" beyond my body. I generate all sword movements by pressing against the earth through a well-bent leg, and by opening & closing / expanding and contracting my joints, in sync with breathing. First I establish a firm base for my body by rooting through one foot or the other. Then I use that connection to the earth to generate a pulse of energy which travels as a wave through my entire body and passes out of my hand, into and through the sword. I project that wave of energy from my center, through the sword. Mind blends with body to produce smooth continuous movement of the sword.
